Irene G Stuart

Irene G. Stuart, of Rockville Centre NY, died peacefully on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Winthrop hospital, after a brief stay. Beloved wife of Dr. Andrew B. Stuart, mother of Pam, John, and Daphne, grandmother to Sarah, Adam, and Anna, and godmother of Kristin. Irene was the daughter of Stella and John Spanos and part of the extended Strategos families, who emigrated from Greece during the Smyrna Catastrophe. During WWII she worked for the Office of War Information, which became the OSS (Office of Strategic Services). She was particularly proud of her work evaluating foreign propaganda and promoting domestic engagement in the war effort, and in cultivating cultural influencers in England and Greece. Her 93 years were spent nurturing her family and friends; she was a unique person with the warmth and sweetness all too rare in the world around us. She will be greatly missed.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 am, on Monday, November 7th, at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Garden City. The burial will be held at Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale, immediately following the mass.

The family will receive family and friends wishing to pay their respects on Sunday, November 6th, from 2 - 6:30pm at Towers Funeral Home.
