Sir Knight Salvatore David (Sal the Pal) D’Anna, 92, of Oceanside, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
Wake services: Visitation will be held at Towers Funeral Home, Oceanside, NY 11572 on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial: St. Anthony Church, 110 Anchor Avenue, Oceanside, NY 11572 on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 10:45 am.
Immediately following the mass, a luncheon celebrating his life will be held at O’Connell Gardens, KofC, Oceanside.
Sal was born in Rockaway Beach Hospital to Mary and Dominick D’Anna on October 11, 1931. He attended Far Rockaway High School, played on the Barnacles Football Team, and excelled in all sports. He was a Jamaica Bay rat and enjoyed clamming. He was a loyal and loving member of Ironworkers Local 361 for 65 years; bridges and structural steel were the fabric of his life. Throggs Neck Bridge, JFK Observation Tower, World’s Fair Unisphere, and Forest Hills Tennis Stadium to name a few. He enjoyed gardening and beautifying the neighborhood; he swept the streets and included the neighbors’ property as well. Years ago, he received a citation from the Mayor of NYC for his sincere effort after all “A Cleaner New York is up to you”! He was very patriotic, a Fourth Degree Knight, Cardinal Mercier Assembly. Formerly a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima and subsequently the Parish of St. Anthony, Oceanside, NY 11572.
Sal is survived by his loving family, Jane, Mary Jo (Frank), John (Barbara) Patti (Pete), Martha (Craig) Hannah (Ian) and Bea. Grandchildren: Matthew (Charlotte), Scott (Amanda), Sera (Angelo), Liz, JoJo, Dave (Angie), Dillon, Meyer, Jules, and Ellie. Great-Grandchild: Ashley, Salvatore, Donovan, Kaison and Noemi. Additional extended family includes brother Ironworkers and brother Knights, and a plethora of cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.
Preceded in death by Blanche, Mary, Dominick, Peter D., and Peter M. May they rest in peace.
Memorial donations may be made to Ironworkers Local 361 Scholarship Fund, 89-19 97th Avenue, Ozone Park, NY 11416, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
