Anna Carney

Ann Carney, former longtime Baldwinite, passes away at 89

Anna M. Carney (nee Dennin) died unexpectedly on April 1, 2020 just three months shy of her 90th birthday.

Born on July 12, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Anna Dennin (nee O'Dea), Anna was the youngest of four children: John Joseph Dennin, Thomas Francis Dennin and Theresa Veronica Dennin Creighton.

Anna (Ann) married Joseph Jerome Carney at the Church of St. Clement the Pope in South Ozone Park on September 27, 1952. They crammed four daughters, three houses and countless dances into 28 loving years before Joe succumbed to lung cancer in 1980, leaving Ann a 50 year old widow.

In 1979, Ann took a job with Adelphi University's School of Social Work, where she worked tirelessly for over 30 years. She helped coordinate the Breast Cancer Support Program, which provides valuable resources for many women suffering from the disease.

Ann was a long-time parishioner of St. Christopher's Church in Baldwin, NY. Ann was proud of the memorial brick and pew which bear the family names (Carney, Dennin & Creighton).

Ann loved to play with her grandchildren, and never hesitated to roll around on the floor with them, even well into her 80's. She was blessed to have spent time enjoying her great-grandchildren, as well.

Ann moved to North Carolina in 2018, after 50 years in Baldwin. There she spent the last two years of her life living close to her eldest daughter and her family, something that gave Ann great joy.

In addition to her loving husband Joseph Carney, Ann is pre-deceased by her siblings and siblings-in-law, with whom she was very close: John & Dorothy Dennin (nee Lancaster), Thomas & Anne Dennin (nee Chunga), Raymond & Theresa Creighton (nee Dennin); her granddaughter Colleen Wallace; and her beloved son-in-law Michael Wallace. Ann is survived by her four daughters: Regina Smith (Sheldon), Alicia Cloonan, Eileen Wallace (the late Michael), and Frances Nesturrick (Gregory); her eight grandchildren Maureen (Ben), Laura (Marcum), Michael (Lauren), Joseph, Daniel (Melissa), Kaitlin (Amanda), Sophie and Margaret; her ten great-grandchildren Kaleigh, Heidi, Clare, Avirin, Morgan, Scarlett, Kyle, Mikaila, Michael & James and her many, many loving nieces & nephews.
