Bernard "Bernie" Weintraub

Bernie Weintraub was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his parents had sought sanctuary. They immigrated to the United States in 1938. He grew up in East New York, Brooklyn where he went to school and was active in sports with other neighborhood kids. He went to East New York Vocational High School as a teenager. After high school, he attended Brooklyn College and graduated in 1953. He was drafted in the Army in 1954 near the end of the Korean War. He was ultimately stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Before he was sent to Japan, he married his wife Lee. He worked as a clerk in the Army in Japan while his wife worked with local children and army kids as a librarian.

After service, he went back to college and ultimately became a substitute teacher and then a full time science teacher at George Gershwin Junior High in Brooklyn for 27 years. After receiving his Masters in Guidance Counseling he became a guidance counselor for nearly 10 years at James Monroe High School in the Bronx.

Bernie and his wife Lee were very active in political activity and engaged members of the Five Towns Forum, frequent attendees at classical music concerts and passionate travelers around the country and around the world. He was preceded in death by his wife Lee of 64 years. He is survived by his two children David and Jeanne, his brother Joe and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Rachel and Jonah.
