Demetra Elias Mirras

Demetra E. Mirras, 91, of Baldwin, NY passed away of natural causes on Jan. 7, 2018 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mirras, and 2 brothers, Gregory and Angelo Vassilakos.

Dee was born on Sept. 7, 1926 to Elias and Stravoula (Gianakouros) Vassilakos in Chicago, Ill. Dee, as she was known to her friends and family, graduated from Amundsen High School, Chicago in 1944. After graduation, she worked for the Treasury Dept. In 1949, she moved to Long Island, NY along with her mother and several siblings, where she worked for the Bell Telephone Co. Married to James Mirras in 1950, they enjoyed 53 years of marriage until he passed away in 2003.

Raised in the ice cream business, Dee, along with Jim, owned ice cream shops and restaurants on Long Island: Pops in Island Park, John's Drive In in Montauk, Snowflake in East Hampton and Health Haven in Oceanside. Known as the nicest lady on Long Island serving the finest ice cream with the warmest smile. Dee always believed "All good things happen around ice cream". She was a wonderful woman, full of boundless energy, running her business', involved with church, Sunday School and women's clubs. Her legendary Christmas cookies and warm heart will surely be missed.

Dee is survived by her sister, Bessie, her children, Karen, Michael and Louis, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, along with many loved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Towers Funeral home, 2681 Long Beach Road, Oceanside, NY on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 at 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 110 Cathedral Ave., Hempstead on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 at 9 am. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale. All who knew Dee are warmly welcomed to attend.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Dee's memory to New Century Hospice/Grace Foundation or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
