Dominick P. Sabatino MD of Rockville Centre, NY passed away on June 2, 2017.
He is the beloved husband of Dr. Bella Silecchia Sabatino for 52 years. Loving father of Denise (Sabatino) Whelan and father-in-law to Bobby Whelan. Devoted grandfather to Matthew, Bryan and Nicholas. Loving brother to Peter (Mary Ann), Anthony (Gemma), Alexander (Karen) and Maryanne Sabatino-Murray (Edward). Loved brother-in-law to Jerome Silecchia, Anthony & MaryAnn Silecchia and Charles & Clare Silecchia. Adored uncle to a multitude of Sabatino and Silecchia nieces and nephews. Admired by many colleagues, friends and grateful patients.
Dr. Sabatino was born on February 10, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York's Fort Greene/Navy Yard section. He attended Public School 67, Boys High School and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Brooklyn College. He studied medicine at the University of Bologna in Italy, Faculty of Medicine & Surgery and graduated with a Medical Doctor degree in 1968. He did his Internship and Pediatric Residency at Long Island College Hospital (LICH) in Brooklyn, NY. After completion of his Chief Residency in Pediatrics, he began a Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and distinguished himself early on as a gifted pediatrician and a caring, knowledgeable Hematology-Oncology specialist. He joined the LICH Attending staff in 1975 and was appointed Co-Director in 1983 holding academic appointments at SUNY Downstate as Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics. He became a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Hematology-Oncology.
In 1987 he accepted the position of Director of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, NY. Until his retirement in December of 2009 he worked tirelessly in caring for children afflicted with blood and cancer diseases and established noted programs in treatment Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia (Cooley's Anemia). He has authored many articles in his field of expertise and became known as an outstanding teacher and lecturer instructing scores of residents in the care of children with cancers and diseases of the blood.
Ever a student of history and the world, he spent his leisure time in the studies of Hebrew history and the life/customs of American Indians collecting numerous books on the subjects and becoming an expert in each field.
He and his wife of 52 years, whom he met while in Medical School in Italy, moved to Rockville Centre, NY in 1990 along with their daughter Denise and his parents. Denise married and over the years he welcomed the birth of his 3 grandsons who truly were the lights of his life and whom he absolutely adored unconditionally.
His family will be forever grateful for the kind, gentle, intelligent, thoughtful, patient and loving man who graced their lives. Dominick will forever live on in their memories as one of the finest, most gracious human beings that they were lucky to be able to call husband/.father/grandfather/brother/brother-in-law/uncle and friend.
