Donald Joseph Duet, Sr.
1941 – 2025
Donald Joseph Duet, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on December 29th, 2025.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1941, Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Constellation (CV-64). As a member of the catapult crew, he was part of the original complement that brought the aircraft carrier into service, serving through its commissioning on October 27, 1961, and its first tour of duty—earning him the title of Esteemed Plank Owner. After his honorable service, he settled on Long Island, New York, in 1964, where he built a rich and fulfilling life.
That same summer of 1964, Donald became a proud member of the New York City District Council of Carpenters, Local 257, dedicating his skilled craftsmanship to the trade until his well-earned retirement.
Donald was married to his devoted wife, Mary Donlon Duet, for 62 years—a testament to their enduring love and partnership. He was the loving and dedicated father of five children, Mary Purick (James), Grace Donlon (Peter), Donald Jr. (Madoka), Kathleen Pirolo (Byron) and Louis (Lori), the proud grandfather of twelve grandchildren, and the joyful great-grandfather of three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, Louis Duet (Christine) of Louisiana, and his sister, Mary Duet Jumonville (Al) of Mississippi.
Donald embraced life with passion and joy. He found great pleasure in woodworking, crafting beautiful heirlooms with his skilled hands; in fishing, hunting, camping, and all outdoor nature activities, where he savored the beauty and tranquility of the natural world; and most of all, in spending precious time with his grandchildren, whose laughter and energy brought him endless happiness.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew his warm spirit, kindness, and unwavering devotion.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 10:45 AM at St. Anthony's Church in Oceanside, New York, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery.
Rest in peace, Donald. Your legacy of love and service lives on in the hearts of those you touched.
