In Loving Memory of Doris

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doris, age 64, a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother to her cherished grand-puppy, and friend whose kindness and love touched all who knew her. Doris lived a life defined by compassion, generosity, and devotion to others. She was the loving wife of Joe Tavernese, devoted mother to Sarah Tavernese, caring sister to Denene Swailes, and a proud cat mom to her beloved Jasmine. Her family was the center of her world, and she gave of herself endlessly to those she loved.

A dedicated teacher's assistant, Doris found immense joy and purpose in her work with children. Her students held a special place in her heart, and she looked forward to each school day with enthusiasm and affection. She had a remarkable gift for making others feel seen, supported, and valued, and the impact she made in the classroom will be remembered by countless students and colleagues. Doris found her greatest peace outdoors. She had an unmatched love for the ocean and the moon, finding beauty, comfort, and inspiration in both. For many years, she faithfully walked the Long Beach Boardwalk every day, embracing the fresh air, the sound of the waves, and the simple joy of being by the water. She delighted in capturing those moments with her selfies and sharing them with friends and family, spreading smiles and sunshine wherever she could. Known for her selfless spirit, Doris was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer a comforting word, or put the needs of others before her own. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering generosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

In her final months, Doris faced a devastating diagnosis of ALS. Though her battle was brief, she fought with extraordinary courage, determination, and grace until her final breath. On May 19, Doris suffered cardiac arrest in the comfort of her home. Surrounded by the love of her family and supported by dedicated medical professionals, she remained at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, where she was peacefully called home on May 28 as a result of permanent brain injury.

Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void, the love she shared and the memories she created will endure forever. She leaves behind her loving husband, Joe Tavernese; her devoted daughter, Sarah Tavernese; her dear sister, Denene Swailes; her cherished grand-puppy, Stoli; beloved cat, Jasmine; and many treasured friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing her.

Doris's legacy lives on in every act of kindness, every walk along the shoreline, every moonlit evening, and every life she touched with her generous heart. She will be deeply missed, endlessly loved, and forever remembered.

"The ocean may take away the footprints in the sand, but it can never wash away the love left behind."

May she rest peacefully beneath the moon she loved so dearly. ❤️
