Dorothy Athalis Anastasiou was born on May 24, 1927, at her family home on 41st Drive in Woodside, New York, to Mersina Mermingopoulos and Efstratios Athalis of Asia Minor and Mytilene, Greece. The youngest of six children: Vasilios, Mary, Constance, Elizabeth, and Eve.
In 1953 Dorothy married Andrew Anastasiou from The Bronx, New York. Their marriage spanned 66 devoted years together until Andrew’s passing in 2019.
Dorothy was a devoted and loving mother to her four children Charlotte, Anastas James, Michael and his wife, Tina, Vala and her husband, Charles. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Anastas James, in 1989.
She was an adored grandmother to Carolyn, Elaina, Maria, Andrew, Matthew, and James, a cherished Nouna to Pamela and Thomas, and a proud Big YiaYia to Anastasia, Persephone, and Cassiopeia. She shared a loving and caring bond with her sister-in-law Christina.
Dorothy was steady, strong, and unwavering in her commitment to family. Through decades of change, she remained a constant presence. Her love was shown through devotion, reliability, and the countless quiet ways she cared for those around her. She built a family rooted in connection, tradition, and respect, and that legacy continues through her children and grandchildren. She was deeply loved, profoundly respected, and will always be remembered for the life she lived and the family she built.
We honor her life with love, respect, and gratitude. She will always be remembered and eternally cherished.
May her memory be eternal.
