Frank Devaney, a devoted educator, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 at Good Shepard Hospice in Mercy Hospital on June 2, 2026. Frank dedicated his life to teaching and serving others, forever leaving a lasting mark on anyone who met him.
Born in Manhattan on March 29, 1931, Frank was one of five children born to Thomas and Mary Devaney. He attended Ascension Elementary School and St. Joseph’s High School in Barrytown, New York, before entering the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree from Catholic University of America in 1954, he began his teaching career at St. Jerome’s School in the Bronx and later worked with troubled and disadvantaged boys at the LaSalle School in Albany while earning a Master’s degree from Manhattan College in 1961.
His dedication to education extended far beyond the United States. From 1961 to 1968, Frank served in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he spent two years teaching English and five years as Principal of Nativity School. Upon returning home, he taught at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx before becoming Principal of St. Joseph’s High School in New Jersey.
In 1970, Frank began a distinguished career with the NYC Board of Education that would span more than three decades. As a Special Education teacher, he worked tirelessly to support students facing emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges. He served at P.S. 8 in Manhattan, P.S. 75 in Queens, Bushwick High School, and Holliswood Hospital, always advocating for inclusion, opportunity, and dignity for every student.
Throughout his more than fifty years in education—whether in private schools, public schools or overseas—Frank’s mission remained constant: to nurture the emotional and academic growth of his students. He encouraged generations of young people to become confident, independent learners and active participants in their communities.
In 1970, Frank married the love of his life, Patricia, a fellow educator. Together they built a family rooted in faith, learning, and service. They were blessed with three children: Steven, Kevin, and Meghan.
Frank was predeceased by his beloved son, Steven and his cherished grandson, Nicolas.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Patricia; his son Kevin and his wife Charlotte; his daughter Meghan; his grandchildren Cassie and her husband Dominick, Christian, Ryan, Zoë, Brandon, Stella; and his treasured great-grandson, Jack. He also leaves behind extended family members, former students, colleagues, and friends whose lives were enriched by his wisdom, kindness, and guidance.
For 50 years Frank was also a dedicated Associate of the Sisters of Charity of New York, reflecting his lifelong commitment to faith and service.
In 2004, the New York State Assembly recognized Frank for fifty years of dedication to children and education, honoring him as an outstanding citizen worthy of the esteem of both his community and the State of New York.
Even after retirement, Frank’s passion for education never waned. He volunteered as an ESL teacher and then went on to help 58 immigrants achieve their dream of becoming US citizens.
Frank’s legacy lives on in the countless students he inspired, the family he cherished, as well as the values of compassion, service, faith, and lifelong learning that he embodied every day. He will be remembered dearly for his kindness, humility, unwavering dedication to others, and his overwhelming positivity.
May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
