George J. Anthony

George J. Anthony, age 95, formerly of Merrick, NY, cherished husband, father, and friend, died on October 7, 2024, in New Jersey. Though born in Reading, Pennsylvania, he spent the first 10 years of his life on the island of Lesvos, Greece, and came to the United States not speaking any English. He always credited one extraordinary teacher, Mrs. Christian, for supporting him as he found his way. Following high school, he served proudly and honorably in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After his military service, he attended Penn State University where he graduated at the top of his class at the Business School. Professionally, he dedicated 30 years to the United States General Accounting Office, where his passion for detail and integrity shone brightly to the colleagues with whom he felt honored to work. Beyond his professional accomplishments, George was fiercely proud of his Greek heritage evidenced by his favorite quote, "Of all peoples, the Greeks have dreamt the dream of life best" from Goethe.  George was an avid reader and debater. He loved engaging in discussions on history, geography, politics and philosophy, often igniting curiosity in those around him. His passion for knowledge was matched only by his love for food and he was very proud of his perfect cheesecake. George lived a life rich with love, very hearty laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family. George’s greatest love was reserved for his beloved wife, Georgia (predeceased in 2015), whose memory remains a guiding light in the hearts of his children who survive him, Helene Dean, John Anthony, and Eva-Maria Anthony (and her spouse, Mary J. Ciancimino). George's legacy of wisdom, humor, and unconditional love will be missed, but will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
