Jean Lucas

Jean Lucas was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. She built a close family with her husband of 74 years, George. Church and family were always at the center of her life. Jean dedicated herself to her family’s happiness and gave her all in everything she did.

Jean was born in Kastoria, Greece on October 31, 1925. She came to this country with her mother and sister in 1938 to join her dad who had arrived earlier to work and set up a home for his family. She attended school in Manhattan but stopped temporarily during high school to work as a finisher in the fur industry to help her family. Jean completed her education by attending evening classes while working.

Jean met George through mutual friends. They were married on October 30, 1949, at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan. They welcomed their daughters, Marge and Cathy, before moving to their home in Flushing in 1956. Their son, Billy arrived soon after. They built their life in Flushing around their Church, Saint Nicholas. Jean loved to sing and joined the choir.

Jean was a stay-at-home Mom until her youngest went to kindergarten. She then started her second career as a sales associate for Gertz on Main Street in Flushing. She made sure her hours allowed her to get home in time for her children. She worked at the same store for thirty-two years, going from Gertz to Sterns to Macy’s.

Jean was a loving wife and a selfless mother, but she managed to become an accomplished bowler and a very determined tennis player. An excellent cook, she would prepare sumptuous meals for her children and grandchildren every week well into her eighties. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, but her favorite trips were the vacations at Hilton Head every February and at Woodloch in the Poconos each September, surrounded by her family, whom she showered with love and kindness, making sure everyone had everything they wanted.

Her family was blessed to have this beautiful, dedicated woman in their lives.
