Joan Irene Barnett

Joan Barnett graduated from Long Beach High School in 1958. She entered the Fashion Institute of Technology with great dreams of being a fashion merchandiser. The commuting to New York City each day told her that this was not the correct direction and she transferred to the State University of New York at New Paltz to obtain her teaching degree. She then moved on to advanced degree work at Hofstra University.

For two years, teaching third grade was her calling. After that she stayed home to devote time to her husband (Sol) and her children (Steven and Kristin). These thirteen years at home were very fulfilling, and she loved every minute of raising her children.

Upon returning to teaching, her new calling was middle school, and then high school. She taught at Hewlett Middle School, Hewlett High School, and then moved to the Oceanside school district where she taught middle school at Boardman and then at Oceanside High School as a long-term substitute for those who became ill. Over the years, many former students came back to thank her for her assistance in directing them to their career that they enjoyed and were successful at.

Joan loved to travel with Sol (most often to Europe but also to Canada, Hawaii, and other parts of the US). In her spare time, Joan enjoyed knitting and reading.
