John Joseph Leonard, age 84, of Point Lookout, NY, passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2025 surrounded by his family. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on May 29, 1941, John was the beloved son of the late William and Gertrude Leonard.
John was a proud graduate of St. Gregory's Grammar School and St. Augustine High School. He went on to earn an associate’s degree from Long Island University. He served honorably in the United States Navy from April 7, 1961, through January 24, 1969, carrying with him a deep and lifelong sense of patriotism.
John’s love of country was part of his daily life—he proudly raised the American flag each morning and brought it in each night, often with the help of his grandchildren, teaching them respect, pride, and tradition.
On January 29, 1966, John married the love of his life, Patricia Healy. Together, they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, faith, and family.
John spent his professional career with AT&T, retiring as a Division Manager. He also dedicated his time and leadership to the community. He was President of the RATS Ski Club, Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and in his youth, was named CYO Boy of the Year at St. Francis de Sales, an honor he carried with pride throughout his life.
Known affectionately as “Poppy” to his grandchildren, John was loyal to his family and friends, a man who placed family above all. John found joy in skiing at Windham Mountain, golfing, relaxing on the beach, and making memories with those he loved most. He had sand in his shoes, laughter in his voice, and a heart full of gratitude.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Leonard; his loving daughters, Mary Beth Coyne (Richard Patrick), Bryanne Graser (Matthew), and Kristen Lees (Scott); and his cherished grandchildren, Riley, Charlie, Catherine, Amelia, Noelle, Caroline, Harrison, and Graham. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Trudy Keating.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, from 3–7 PM at Towers Funeral Home, 2681 Long Beach Road, Oceanside, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 19, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Point Lookout, NY. John will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, strong faith, love of country, and deepdevotion to his family. His legacy lives on in all who had the blessing to know and love him.
