John Kevin, a lifelong Brooklyn native whose life was defined by love of family, faith, and adventure, passed away peacefully on November 8th at the age of 87.
John Kevin attended Fort Hamilton High School, where his love of sports first took root. A devoted Brooklyn Dodgers fan in his youth, he later became an avid New York Mets supporter.
After high school, John Kevin was drafted to play for a minor league baseball team, but he chose instead to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He served for two years with great pride and satisfaction, an experience that shaped his deep sense of duty and integrity.
In 1964, John Kevin met the love of his life, Mabel, and the two were married in 1966. Together they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage filled with countless cherished memories.
John Kevin was a passionate golfer and found great joy coaching Little League, sharing his love of the game. Above all, he was his children’s and grandchildren’s biggest supporter — whether at dance recitals, sports games, or orchestra concerts, Dad (or Poppy, as he was lovingly known) was always there with a smile, a cheer, and endless pride.
Many of the family’s fondest memories were made during summers on Long Beach Island, where John Kevin, Mabel, and their children spent countless days enjoying the beach and time together. During his retirement years, John Kevin and Mabel continued their adventures together, traveling the world — from Europe to New Zealand to the Galápagos Islands — visiting every continent except Antarctica. No distance was too far when it came to exploring the world together.
John Kevin is survived by his beloved wife, Mabel; his sister, Mary Jane; and dear friend, Nancy. He leaves behind his loving children — son Brian and his wife Sarah, daughter Ann and her husband Charles, and daughter Michele and her husband Stephen — and his cherished grandchildren: Mark, Julia, Thomas, Ethan and Nora.
John Kevin will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his warm heart, and his joy for life. His legacy of devotion, laughter, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Services will be held at Towers Funeral Home on Wednesday, 11/12 from 4-8 PM, with funeral mass on Thursday, 11/13 at 9:45 at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Oceanside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
