Joseph Leonard Gress Jr.

Joseph L. Gress, 90, of Baldwin, New York, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, hard work, and service to others.

Born and raised in Baldwin, Joseph spent his entire life in the community he loved and faithfully served. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, and friend whose kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone he met.

Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine, his middle school sweetheart and lifelong partner, with whom he shared a remarkable life built on love, faith, and family. He was also preceded in death by his cherished great-granddaughter, Mayzie.

He is survived by his four children: Michael Gress and his wife Cheryl; Marie and her husband John; Joseph Gress and his wife Yvonne; and Lisa and her wife Wendy. He was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 17 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. He is also survived by his Sister in law of 70 years Carmela Daeder.

A man of deep faith, Joseph was an active member of his parish throughout his life. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and dedicated countless hours as a youth leader, helping to guide and inspire generations of young people in their faith.

Joseph was also a hardworking entrepreneur who owned and operated his own landscaping business for more than 30 years. Through his work, he earned the respect and admiration of customers, colleagues, and friends throughout the community.

Known for his willingness to lend a hand, Joseph never met a stranger. Whether working on an engine, fixing a project, helping a neighbor, or sharing a story, he had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued. His strong work ethic, humble spirit, and genuine concern for others made him a beloved figure in Baldwin and beyond.

Joseph’s greatest joy was his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a steadfast example of faith, integrity, and compassion. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he strengthened, and the countless lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
