Louis Phuros of Malverne New York, age 79, fell asleep in the Lord on Friday October 2nd 2015 at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside New York. Louis, being the good sport that he was, allowed prostate cancer to finally win one battle after being undefeated for almost 5 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Haralambos and Diamando, Father-in-law, Andres Nasser, his Uncle Tommy and Thea Jean aka "Mom" and his cousin and dear comrade in the battle against cancer, Fr. George Dounelis.
Louis was Born in Vassara, Sparta, Greece, on October 30, 1936 to Diamando and Haralambos Katsiafouros. Louis came to the United States, with his cousin, Artie Katsiafouros in 1955. They were welcomed to their new home in Queens Village, N.Y. by their uncle and aunt, Tommy and Jean Phuros, and their "little sister and brother" Kathy and Jimmy. Jimmy very quickly renamed Louis, "Leela"... a name that has very affectionately stuck until this day. Louis very quickly accepted the love of his new family and bestowed the very special and loving title of Mom to his Thea Jean to whom he was lovingly devoted until her passing. On February 10, 1963 Louis married the love of his life, Salua Nasser and lived a life devoted to one another for 52 years.
In Greece, Louis worked as an apprentice shoemaker, and on his arrival in the US he started work in the restaurant business, working his way up from bus boy to broiler- man with his Uncle Tommy at Perriwinkle Restaurant in Hollis, Queens. Louis finally found his niche in the early 1970's when he started his own business - L.P. Home improvement. Later, in his "retirement," he worked at his cousin Artie's Ice Cream Shop - Marvel, in Lido Beach.
Louis was a devoted husband and like a fine wine, his love for his wife grew stronger with age. He was a devoted Brother, Nouno, Theo, Cousin and Papoo. He especially loved children, and treated every child in his life as his own. He had an especially strong bond with his Godchild Billy, whom he affectionately nicknamed "Katapothi". His devotion to his family and friends was unwavering. Louis touched many people in his life, and, in his battle with Prostate Cancer, was an inspiration to everyone around him. He was a kind man with a huge heart. He was always happy and jovial and had a story for everything. He was stubborn as an old mule and had an uncanny knack of saying the wrong thing at just the right time - but for those who knew and loved him; he was perfect and wouldn't have him any other way. That was just Louie.
Louis was also an avid hunter who loved to spend time in the mountains of New York. On many occasions, he would joke that when his time came, he wanted to be left sitting on a rock, rifle in hand, deep in the woods. Those that knew him best, know that he is there.
Louis is survived by his beloved wife Salua Phuros, his Brother and sister-in law Konstantinos and Yannoula and their children Haralambos and Deamando and their children, his brothers and sisters in-law, Jose and Olga Nasser and their children AJ and Tricia and their children, his brother –in law, Andy Nasser and his three sons, his Step Mother Patricia Nasser, Cousin Arte Katsiafouros, his loving Godson Billy Alexopoulos and his wife Georgia and daughter Angelina, and Billy's brothers, Tommy and John, his "sister and brother" Kathy Phuros Dounelis and Jimmy Phuros, and nieces and nephews Nikki, Jess, Gina, Greg, Kate, Tommy, and great nephew George, and a small army of family and friends.
Sleep well Louis, you will be loved and remembered for eternity!
