Born in Emborios, Nisyros, Greece, in 1932, she was raised in Akron, Ohio and New York City, NY. In
November 1953, she married the love of her life, George Anastasios Pourakis, in New York City. They shared
59 wonderful years together until his passing in June 2013.
A devoted mother, she was cherished by her children: Fr. Anastasios (Pres. Georgia) Pourakis, Calliopi
Pourakis (of blessed memory), and Anne (Lazaros) Alexandrou.
She was a proud grandmother to five: Dr. George (Karla) Pourakis, Virginia (Dimitrios) Theodoropoulos, John
Pourakis, Alexander (Elizabeth) Alexandrou, and Anastasia Alexandrou. Her love extended to the next
generation, as a great-grandmother to Anastasios and Sydney Pourakis and Athanasios Theodoropoulos.
A dedicated homemaker for most of her life, she poured her heart into raising and educating her children. She
took great pride in earning her driver’s license and later working part-time at a local bank.
Known for her boundless kindness and unwavering hospitality, she embraced the Greek tradition of filoxenia,
always welcoming and caring for others.
She cherished time with her grandchildren, spending countless hours with them in Greenport and Greece. Her
life’s journey was truly transcontinental, marked by numerous ocean voyages between Greece and America.
Adapting seamlessly to American culture and language, she was impeccably bilingual. In Astoria, she was
affectionately regarded as the unofficial "mayor" of 34th Street, always ready to assist friends and neighbors
with household and family matters.
She joyfully donated towards her church and other philanthropic causes including altar boy robes and
iconography.
After receiving her last prayers and Holy Communion acknowledging her imminent journey she peacefully fell
asleep in the Lord in the early morning of February 21, 2025.
Her legacy is one of love, kindness, generosity, and an enduring spirit that touched everyone who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to:
