Michael William Cathers

Michael William Cathers, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away at the age of 70 on October 20, 2024. He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Patricia; his cherished son, Benjamin and his wife, Amanda; and his adoring granddaughter, Josephine. Michael was also the loving brother of Kathy Newnan.

For 45 years, Michael served Nassau County. His career started as a Child Protective Specialist with the Department of Social Services. It was during this time that Mike and Patti met and fell in love. Michael then went on to become a probation officer through Nassau County Probation, where he ultimately rose to the position of Assistant Deputy Director. During his time at Probation, Michael was instrumental in developing a number of programs and initiatives aimed at reducing recurrences of drunk driving and working to truly rehabilitate those he encountered. Michael was highly regarded by all of his colleagues and considered an excellent boss by those he supervised. His commitment to public service and unwavering dedication to helping others left a lasting impact on countless lives.

A passionate lover of music, Michael found joy in the sounds of the Grateful Dead, which filled his home with harmony and warmth. He cherished the moments spent sharing his love for music with family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Michael also loved food, and had quite a sense of adventure when it came to trying new things, whether it was alligator sausage at the French Market in New Orleans or various seafood delicacies in the street markets of Japan.

For many, the lasting image of Michael will be as the one and only “Coach Mike” who spent countless Saturdays over the course of nine years coaching third base for the “Weekend Swingers”. Those who were part of the team will never forget his commitment to them, and his joy in sharing their wins, especially the four Championships they won together.

Michael’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and service will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Towers Funeral Home, 2681 Long Beach Road, Oceanside, New York. All who knew and loved Michael are welcome to attend and celebrate his remarkable life.
