Steinberger, Mildred “Millie” (Laufer), age 94, of Long Beach, passed away suddenly
on August 30, 2016, from undiagnosed cancer. She leaves behind her daughters Leslie
Laufer and Meredith Laufer Belkin, son-in-law Richard, granddaughter Julia, and four
nephews. Born in Astoria in 1921, Mildred was the second child of the late Henry and Rose
(Watson) Konrath of Queens. She was raised in East Northport where she starred in many local
theatrical productions as a youngster, along with her sister Evelyn, then danced professionally
post high school. She met and married Edward Laufer in 1942 and raised her two daughters
in Carle Place while working as an Executive Secretary at Sperry Rand/Unisys in Syosset.
Widowed at age 37, Mildred eventually remarried and moved to Hauppauge, and later,
Long Beach. She retired in l987 and for the past 22 years acted as primary caretaker for
her daughter Leslie, who was left paralyzed from Multiple Sclerosis. Mildred remained
alert and well informed in her advanced years, with a love of of news programs, word
puzzles and cryptograms. She was remarkably healthy until her final days. Private
