Olga Marie Soscia Soren (1932 - 2016)
Our mother, Olga Marie Soscia Soren, left this earth on November 23, 2016 but she will remain in our hearts forever. Known for her beauty, style, elegance and love of family, Olga will be missed by her children, grandchildren and many friends. Born in Brooklyn, New York on September 23, 1932 to Emilio and Mary Scarpulla Soscia, Olga was the youngest child of Italian immigrants. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers Anthony and Louis Soscia.
As a young girl, Olga was mesmerized by fashion, the theatre and the actress Elizabeth Taylor. She actually looked like Elizabeth Taylor and fashioned her prom dress after Elizabeth Taylor's prom dress. Many people agreed they looked very similar to each other. While attending Washington Irving High School in Manhattan in the Class of 1950, she met her husband, Sid Soren (Haaren High School) at a Sadie Hawkins dance and married in August 31, 1951. Together, they raised four beautiful children, until their marriage ended in divorce, in 1971.
Her four children, Diane Soren Coan (Ron), David (Janet), Jeffrey (Heather) and Barry (Rebecca) were the loves of her life along with her six adorable grandchildren: Jared Blake DiCroce, Danielle, Sydney, Noelle, Sammy and Zachary. Olga treasured their affection and saved all their cards and letters that she received over the years. Countless photos of her children and grandchildren were displayed on every wall in her home, in Rockaway Beach. Olga’s children and grandchildren warmed her heart and gave her purpose. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lola Kalbrofsky (Sid's sister) who she considered more a sister than a sister-in–law.
Olga held a variety of exciting and challenging jobs but found her calling in 1983, working for the New York Compensation Board for 16 years, until her retirement in 1999. Throughout her life, Olga always wore the latest fashion and loved bright colors. After her retirement, Olga took advantage of the Queens Public Library System as a voracious reader.
An intimate evening memorial service for Olga was held at Towers Funeral Home in Oceanside, Long Island on November 30, 2016. Hosted by her family, it was truly a celebration of her full life and testimony to the impact she had on her family and friends. All her colorful silk scarves adorned the room in lieu of flowers. The room had a "living room" vibe that Olga would have loved. The request was made by the family, that friends and family please wear colorful clothing to represent her colorful life. Friends and family told stories, both funny & sad of their memories and encounters with Olga. She will be missed by so many but her vibrant spirit lives on.
JASA’s (Jewish Association for Services for the Aged) was an integral part of Olga’s daily life, as their Meals-on-Wheels program allowed her to live independently in her latter years. She was so grateful to be a recipient of this critical community program. As a token of appreciation for this wonderful program, Olga’s family has started a fund for the JASA Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program. The website is: https://fundly.com/olga-soren-memorial-fund.
All donations are welcome to help this amazing program continue to be available for others, in the future.
Good bye for now Mom, you will truly be missed by all who knew & loved you!!!
