Richard (Dick) Henry Schroeder Sr. 101 years old, born October 10, 1913 in Baldwin Harbor, Long Island to parents Edward Schroeder and Adelaide Verity. Dick passed peacefully at the Wuesthoff Hospice House in the afternoon of September 13, 2015 surrounded by his family. Dick is survived by his wife, Frances Pearl Schroeder (nee Sutera) of Montclair, New Jersey, 3 children, Richard Henry Schroeder Jr., James Augustus Schroeder, and Susan Janet Schroeder Waldron, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Dick and Frances met in Newark, New Jersey in their early 20's, in 1935. Shortly thereafter they married October 16, 1937 and began their immediate family. Dick and Frances settled in Oceanside, New York where they resided for 70 years. In 2010 they "retired" to Merritt Island, FL to be closer to family.
Dick's family lineage extends back to the 1600's on long island. The Schroeder-Verity history includes a rich heritage of farming, fishing, carpentry, boat building, entrepreneurship, and community service. Dick established himself in the community as a trusted friend, volunteer firefighter and a successful business owner. Dick was a significant benefactor to numerous charities and earned the rank of Captain in the Salamander Hook Ladder & Bucket Company of the Oceanside Volunteer Fire Department. Most of all Dick was a devoted and loving husband, father, pop pop, and great grandpa. A great story teller and amateur historian, Dick shared his love for family, fishing and history with everyone.
A graveside service for Dick will be held on Monday, September 21st, at Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale. The funeral procession will be departing from Towers Funeral Home shortly after meeting at 10AM.
