Robert E. Bettes

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Robert E. Bettes, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, beloved brother, uncle, dedicated firefighter, and an extraordinary man who gave so much of himself to the people he loved and the community he proudly served.

Robert was the beloved husband of Sandra Bettes and the loving father of Nicole, Pamela, and Robert, along with his sons-in-law Abraham and Steven, who were also an important part of his family. He was the proud grandfather of Camden, Aubrey, Isaac, and Nolan, who were truly the joy of his life.

There was nothing Robert loved more than his family, and his grandchildren held an especially precious place in his heart. From the moment each of them was born, he was there holding them as soon as he saw them, spending his days watching over them, and cherishing every moment he had with them. Camden, Aubrey, Isaac, and Nolan could always bring the biggest smile to his face, and they loved their Grandpa just as much as he loved them. The special bond they shared was something truly beautiful, and those memories will remain with them forever.

Robert was part of a large, close-knit family, and being an uncle was another role he cherished. His nieces and nephews were an important part of his life, and his loss will be deeply felt throughout the entire family. He leaves behind not only his immediate family, but generations of loved ones who will miss his presence, his kindness, his laughter, and the way he was always there when someone needed him.

Robert was the kind of man who never hesitated to help someone in need. If someone needed a helping hand, he was there. Whether it was family, friends, or a neighbor, he gave his time, his strength, and whatever he could without ever expecting anything in return. Helping others was simply who he was.

His dedication to helping others extended far beyond his family through his lifelong commitment to the fire service. In 1972, Robert became a member of Terrace Hose and Chemical Company #3, beginning what would become more than five decades of dedicated service.
Throughout his years with the company and department, Robert served on multiple committees at both the company and department levels. His dedication and leadership earned him the positions of 2nd Lieutenant in 1975, 1st Lieutenant in 1976, and Captain in 1977. In 1997, he attained the rank of 3rd Assistant Chief, and in 2000, he proudly became Chief of Department. In 2004, Robert once again stepped forward to serve as Chief, taking on the role in honor and memory of his late brother, Thomas Bettes Sr., who had passed away while serving as First Assistant Chief.

For Robert, being a firefighter was never simply a title or a position. It was a part of who he was. He was proud of his company, proud of his department, and proud to serve his community. Even after so many years of service, his commitment never faded. He continued to be involved and dedicated to the fire service until his untimely passing.

Robert will be remembered for his enormous heart, his generosity, his willingness to always help, his devotion to his family, and his unwavering dedication to the fire service. But most of all, he will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who loved his family more than anything in this world.

His passing leaves an emptiness that can never be filled. His wife Sandra, children Nicole, Pamela, and Robert, sons-in-law Abraham and Steven, grandchildren Camden, Aubrey, Isaac, and Nolan, siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, fellow firefighters, and friends will miss him more than words can express.

Although our hearts are broken, we are grateful for every moment we were blessed to have with him. His legacy will live on through his children, his grandchildren, his family, the countless people he helped, and the fire service to which he dedicated so much of his life.
Rest easy, Dad. You answered every call. You were always there when we needed you, and you gave a lifetime of service to others. Your greatest legacy is the love you gave your family. We will carry that love with us forever.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our husband, Dad, Grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.
