Robert Henry Sandhaas

Robert Henry Sandhaas, 90, of Baldwin, NY, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on April 26, 1932, the son of Mary and John, and raised in Hollis, Queens. He was a man of strong faith, intelligence, humor, deep loyalty and love, and unwavering integrity.

As a young boy, Bob always kept his eyes on the skies. A graduate of Chaminade and Villanova, Bob fulfilled his childhood dream of flying, becoming an aircraft carrier pilot in the U.S. Navy, followed by illustrious careers as a pilot for Eastern Airlines and an inspector for the FAA.

The best thing he landed, however, was his wife Mary, his beloved spouse of 61 years. He was the devoted father to six children: Michael Sandhaas, Diane (Ken) Hoefer, Joan (Ed) Bain, Mary (Jim) O’Leary, Janet (Jon) Escher and Annette (Travis) Uvena. He was the adored grandfather to thirteen grandchildren: Jenny, Eddie, Diane, Jessie, Kate, Ben, Maureen, James, John, Kenny, Owen, Harry, and Abby; as well as a great-grandson, Beck. He is survived by his family, his brother Jack, wonderful in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind lifelong cherished friends and neighbors, as well.

In honor of Captain Bob, wave at a plane flying overhead, do a crossword puzzle (in pen, all caps), swim in the ocean, play a round of golf, or share a strong cup of coffee with someone who makes you laugh.

Visitation will be held at 4–7 PM on Friday, January 27, at Towers Funeral Home, Oceanside, NY. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:45 AM on Saturday, January 28, at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Oceanside, NY. Interment to immediately follow at Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury, NY.
