Stylianos "Steve/Stelios/Pappou" Vlahakis of Oceanside, New York, passed away peacefully at home on August 19. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Maria, their children Evie (late Steven Koufakis), Nick (Barbara), John (Jackie), Anastasia (George) and 12 cherished grandchildren: Gabriella, Nicholas, Chloe, Austin, Michael, Artemios, Harrison, Alexandra, Nikko, Jeorgiana, Christina and Matthew.
Born on February 25, 1934 in Hania, Crete, Greece, he was the beloved son of Evridiki Vardakis and Nikolaos Vlahakis. He was preceded in death by his brother Yianni. After immigrating to the US, he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division "The Screaming Eagles." He later settled in Washington Heights, NYC, building a life with Maria and his devoted mother. They moved to Oceanside, Long Island to raise their family, grew a successful car mechanic business, was an active supporter of the Greek Community in New York and Florida, and always lived on his own terms.
A lifelong outdoorsman, skilled hunter, avid fisherman, and passionate Yankees fan, he remained active until the very end Steve had a way of making every encounter memorable, with his signature greeting, "What's the story?” and a big smile. His family and friends are invited to share their stories and memories with Maria and his children as they celebrate his life and keep his legacy alive.
