Vernestine Elizabeth Langley Exum passed away on June 21st, 2023, in Mount Sinai hospital.
Vernestine was born in Edgecomb County NC to Milton and Mattie Langley on February 2nd, 1935, the 8th of eleven children.
She attended and graduated from Conetoe High School in 1953. She left NC to stay with her sisters in Richmond VA, but ultimately returned back to NC to marry her childhood boyfriend, Robert Earl Exum. They moved to New York City, where they started their family, and began their flourishing life.
For over three decades, she dedicated herself to the healthcare field, serving as a first a Nurse’s Aide and then a Unit Clerk within St. Barnabas Hospital. Her unwavering commitment and expertise touched countless lives, providing comfort and healing to those in need. Vernestine demonstrated unwavering dedication, constantly going above and beyond to ensure the well-being of her patients and colleagues.
Beyond her professional achievements, Vernestine was a devoted mother to her three beloved children, LaVerne Johnson, Robert and Sanford Exum. She lovingly poured her heart and soul into raising them, instilling in them the values of kindness, integrity, and resilience.
Not only was Vernestine a nurturing mother, but she was also an active participant in our community. She selflessly dedicated her time and energy to various charitable causes, exemplifying the essence of altruism. Whether it was volunteering at local shelters, organizing community events, or lending a helping hand to those in need, she made a profound impact on the lives she touched. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her passion for making a difference will continue to inspire us all.
In addition to her children, Vernestine is survived by her sister Velma Bunch of Richmond, VA , 6 grandchildren; Maurice S. Johnson, Joyce C. Johnson, John William D. Johnson, Tyler Exum, Chandler Exum, Taylor Exum, 2 great grandchildren; DeVante D. Hayes, Jason L. Hayes, and 1 great-great grandchild; Chase N. Hayes, as well as other sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband; Robert Earl Exum. Parents; Milton & Mattie Exum, child; Gary S. Exum, grandson Jordin Exum and siblings: Kade, Genane, Maglene, Milton Jr., Hattie Mae, James Ray, Gatha Lee, Vernell, Tommy Louis.
Vernestine will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith and profound love for Jehovah God. Her spirituality was the guiding force behind all her actions, providing her with strength during challenging times and inspiring her to extend love and compassion to all.
The family would like to extend a special thank you for everyone as Our mother was many things to a plethora of people, and we are aware she will be missed dearly by the masses.
