William Mavon Schachtel, 83, passed away on June 15, 2021 at his home in Micco, Florida. He was the widower of Grace Smith-Schachtel. They shared 17 years of loving marriage together.
He is survived by his children from his previous marriage to Anne Butler; John, Anne, Adam, Peter (Elizabeth), William (Meaghan) and Gregory (April). His grandchildren Sarah, Ryann, Shannon, Lucas, Ava, Liam, Addison, Alex, Connor and Brady. He was also the grandfather to Meghan and Dylan who pre-deceased him.
Born in St. Albans, New York, he was the son of Mavon and Loretta Virginia Schachtel. He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1955. He had early employment in various areas, but his final and most fulfilling career was with the New York City Police Department. He worked at various precincts, receiving numerous honors and awards and finished his career as a Detective in the NYPD Crime Scene Unit.
Bill enjoyed traveling, fishing, bird watching, photography and gardening. He loved to read, especially history books. He will be remembered for his love of nature and the environment. His love of travel sent him around the globe to experience different cultures and to see the landscapes of the world. He loved to tell stories of his travels to China and the Far East, Alaska, Russia, South America and Europe. Bill shared so many of his favorite people through his stories and always gave a story a good laugh. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and quirky take on life.
The viewing will be held on June 25, 2021 at Towers Funeral Home at 2681 Long Beach Road, Oceanside, New York from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm. The interment will be at Pinelawn Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York on June 26, 2021.
