William S. Mouzon

William Shakespeare Mouzon was born in Clarendon County South Carolina to Hester and Shervine Mouzon on February 12, 1939. His mother died when he was two years old and his maternal grandmother Salina Ned and his uncle Leard Samuel Bennett raised him and his younger brother Levan. Through his teen years he worked hard on the farm. He graduated from Williamsburg County High School in 1959 and moved to Hempstead Long Island to pursue a better life.

William, also known as "Bill", "Shake", "Speare" and "Pops," obtained his first job at Double Day while pursuing a career in the art field. He later worked as a graphic artist for Daniel and Charles in Manhattan. Bill married Heidi Bennett in the summer of 1961. He was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1962 and stationed at White Sands New Mexico. Honorably discharged in 1964, he returned to his wife and child in Jamaica Queens.

Bill attended night classes at The American Art School, Queens College, and Pace University and worked for Larry Smith and Company for 10 years. Later he worked for Stone and Webster on the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant project. He retired in December 2000 after a twenty-year career as a cartographer with the City of New York Bronx Borough President's Office.

Bill was very active in his community. He was a PAL member and volunteered as a coach for the little league baseball team. He served as treasurer of the local bowling league. He believed in sports and the value of team participation in shaping character and always pushed the need for education. He served as president of the 196 Street Block Association in Saint Albans, Queens and created the neighborhood watch. He was politically active and served as a Chapter President for the Technical Guild Union. He achieved Master of the Samuel Lodge #6, (Hiram Grand Lodge A. F. & A. M.), Potentate of the Omar Temple A. A. O. N. M. S and he was a member of the Keystone consistory 33rd and last degree.

Bill was a true and loyal friend, always available to lend a hand. He would leave the comfort of his bed in the wee hours of the morning to help a stranded friend.
